Are you ready to play a vital role in life-changing medicine? UPMC Hanover is seeking full-time flex Medical Laboratory Scientists and Medical Laboratory Technicians to join our dynamic team! This role includes variable day, evening, and night shifts, with some holiday and weekend coverage. These are generalist positions that support and rotate through all areas of the laboratory.

*Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Medical Lab Scientist’s salary starts at $29.07/hour.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate professionally and courteously with all laboratory customers and respond promptly to inquiries.
  • Follow all lab and hospital policies related to procedures, quality control, safety, and compliance.
  • Collect and process specimens accurately, including phlebotomy when required, ensuring sample integrity.
  • Perform precise qualitative and quantitative analyses according to established protocols.
  • Identify and address critical or abnormal test results promptly, initiating corrective actions as needed.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation, specimen, and supply issues following standard protocols.
  • Operate, maintain, and perform minor repairs on lab equipment, conduct quality control and preventive maintenance.
  • Manage reagents and supplies efficiently, maintaining appropriate inventory levels.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of lab techniques, instruments, and physiological factors affecting test outcomes.
  • Participate in test development, equipment evaluation, and implementation.
  • Independently perform High Complexity Testing as defined by regulatory standards.
  • Provide temporary first-line supervision as delegated.
  • Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as assigned.

Medical Lab Technician:
• Associate’s degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR
• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience OR
• Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA ’88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
• Minimum 1year’s experience in a hospital laboratory preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

Medical Lab Scientist:
• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program OR;
• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification OR;
• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years’ experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory OR;
• Prefer 1 year of experience in a hospital laboratory.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
    Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred.
