Overview Store General Manager - Greater Manchester, CT Area. The General Manager is responsible for leading through Petco’s vision of “Healthier Pets. Happier People. Better World.” to develop a high‑performing team that delivers top‑line sales growth while focusing on the welfare, health, and proper care of all animals. The GM drives business through people, performance, and process to achieve profitability. This role requires passion for pets, leadership, process excellence, and a drive for results. Position Responsibilities The GM regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment to execute Pet Care Center activities that create the best possible partner, guest, and pet experience. The role entails leading people and pet care and performing all essential job duties safely and effectively. Train, coach, and develop leaders and hourly Pet Care Center partners to run the store efficiently and to Petco standards, including selling model rollouts. Create a professional environment that inspires growth and engagement. Lead a culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration; provide clear direction and priorities. Ensure quick and courteous service by helping partners determine guests’ needs and sharing product knowledge to meet customer needs. Responsible for all partner performance management in the Pet Care Center. Demonstrate and support a continuous improvement and growth mindset. Performance Meet or exceed goals related to total Pet Care Center sales, profitability, and operational excellence. Schedule and adjust labor hours and payroll to maximize productivity and achieve sales and payroll goals. Review financial and operational reporting regularly, including store visits and audits. Identify underperforming metrics and develop strategies using Petco programs and resources to improve and grow the business. Market the Pet Care Center and coordinate on-site and community events (adoptions, school visits, local promotions, and animal-welfare events). Process Ensure proper health, appearance, welfare, and handling of all animals. Price, display, and stock merchandise according to inventory levels and visual standards; adjust merchandising as needed for store-specific execution. Complete and submit accounting, inventory management, and payroll paperwork timely; manage expenses within budget. Maintain Pet Care Center appearance per operational standards and safety procedures. Protect pets and merchandise, minimize loss, and ensure safety, inventory control, and loss prevention. Open/close the Pet Care Center in accordance with policies and safety procedures. Maintain professional image, appearance, and cleanliness of the Pet Care Center. Other Essential Duties Model inspiring leadership and proactive guidance to maintain a positive business climate aligned with company goals. Promote safety and ensure policies are observed and implemented with a focus on partner, guest, and pet safety. Foster a collaborative culture that values teamwork and continuous improvement. Prioritize talent development and maintain a strong talent bench through training and recruitment. Engage and be present; represent Petco’s brand with high standards in a positive work environment. Education And Experience High school diploma or GED; proficiency in basic business/finance, analysis, problem-solving, people development, and guest service. Excellent communication and computer skills. Three or more years of management experience; prior retail management preferred. Working knowledge of general business practices and strong organizational skills. Strong customer service orientation and ability to train others; professional appearance and demeanor; genuine interest in animals. Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle. Completion of PETCO Management Achievement Program modules may be required for internal candidates. Supervisory Responsibility The General Manager directly supervises a team of leaders and all Pet Care Center partners involved in services. Work Environment Most duties are indoors; some duties may require lifting (up to 50 pounds), standing for long periods, and occasional travel. Safety precautions must be followed to prevent injuries. Contacts Continuous contact with the public and regular interaction with other departments, distribution centers, and support centers.
