Job Description:

The Economist is a subject matter expert on specific aspects of banking and financial services, with a strong understanding of practices, policies, and regulations related to banks and non-banks, their products, and customers. The role requires rigorous quantitative economic analysis of ongoing trends in banking and the broader financial sector, along with expertise in relevant data sets and their limitations.

Research output includes white papers, blogs, op-eds, testimonies, comments on consultations and rule proposals, and presentation decks. The incumbent assesses the qualitative and quantitative impacts of regulatory changes on banks, financial service providers, their customers, and the broader US economy.

The Economist conducts quantitative analysis on micro issues (e.g., mortgage loans, small business lending, credit cards, savings, and investment products) and macro systemic issues (e.g., financial inclusion, systemic risk, financial stability, resilience of financial institutions).

The role involves researching ongoing banking and financial services trends, access to financial services, costs, competition, and macro issues related to financial inclusion. Collaboration with colleagues across ABA policy and engagement teams is essential.

Risk management topics include interest rate and credit risk, operational and cyber risk, digital assets, and emerging topics. The incumbent keeps abreast of industry practices, standards, regulations, and research, communicating developments through research notes and presentations, including impact assessments.

As an advisor to the Chief Economist, the incumbent develops policy positions, supporting arguments, and necessary research and analyses. The role has high visibility with bankers, policymakers—including Congress and regulatory agencies—media, and the public.

The Economist quickly addresses new issues, bringing analytical expertise to inform ABA’s policy stance. Building strong relationships with regulatory agencies, think tanks, and academic experts domestically and internationally is vital.

The incumbent will regularly present at ABA conferences, member meetings, and industry events, and participate in various ABA committees, providing quantitative economic expertise.

Other projects and duties will be assigned as needed.

Position Requirements:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in economics, finance, public policy, or a related field
  • 10–12+ years of economics experience related to financial services practice, research, or policy
  • Managerial/leadership experience is preferred but not required
  • Extensive knowledge of financial services practices and regulations
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Advanced analytical capabilities and experience
  • Strategic and lateral thinking, with the ability to envisage impacts across business and policy areas and develop actionable strategies
  • Ability to explain economic concepts to non-experts
  • Ability to travel (<20%)

Target salary for role: $235,000 - $250,000

Salary Band Range: $168,536 – $235,977 – $303,419
